It is essential to inspect all underslung tanks, pies and folding steps on your motorhome. All

tanks need to be checked to make sure all straps are in good order and are supporting the

tanks properly.

It is also necessary to check the insulation on your water tanks, These can become damaged or torn if hit by road debris. The insulation is usually a foil type that is fixed with regular duct tape. This tape can lose its adhesion over time and can fall off. You can just replace with like for like but a better option is foil tape that plumbers and heating duct engineers use. It is more expensive than duct tape but is super sticky and will last 10 times longer.

All pipes need to be checked against leaks. Pay close attention to any hose clamps for wear

and corrosion. Also look for kinks, cuts and cracks in any rubber or plastic hoses.

Make sure all hoses are secured with clips/zip ties and are not rubbing against anything else.

Check any retractable steps. Lubricate all folding mechanisms and inspect for wear and

corrosion. Check all retaining springs and any electric motor connections for water tightness.

Finally check for smooth operation of any step and check the step surface for grip.

On caravans you also need to check the corner steadies. These are not jacks and should not be used to lift the caravan. Some of these steadies are not fixed to structural steel load bearing parts of the chassis and if too much pressure is applied they could damage the caravan floor.

The steadies need to be checked for smooth and free operation. During the check these should be cleaned and re lubricated. Try not to cover them in excessive grease as this attracts dirt and grit from transporting the van and can clog up the threads.
