Ventilation is a big part of your habitation check which is usually looked over. Ventilation helps
keep away moisture and condensation in your vehicle and comes as vents in the floor or roof
and even your windows. Condensation and moisture buildup can lead to dampness which if left
untreated can become a costly problem which is why it's so important to ensure your ventilation is correct.
Fixed ventilation, check for obstructions & free airflow
It’s important to check your motorhome or caravan fixed ventilation for any obstructions
ensuring free airflow. It’s important to regulate the airflow coming in and out of your vehicle
which is achieved by making sure the correct type of ventilation is fitted.
Ensuring your ventilation is in working order helps regulate the internal climate creating a
comfortable environment, combats the build-up of moisture and any unpleasant odours or
pollutants.
To check your fixed ventilation you will want to locate the lower and higher ventilation points and ensure they have nothing blocking them, make sure there is nothing paced over the top or within the vents that would block them and stop them from efficiently working.
Check all ventilation is guarded against vermin ingress
Vermin ingress is where vermin enters the vehicle via the ventilation points. It is important to
ensure the ventilation to the outside has the proper guards that will stop pests from entering
your motorhome or caravan.
The lower vents should have a form of metal or plastic guard in a grid formation. The windows and doors should all have working pleated cassette blinds with no tears.
When checking the ventilation ensure each guard works well and is in good condition.
Roof lights, check for cracks, operation & free of obstructions
Roof lights have two jobs, they let more natural light into the living area and provide ventilation.
As we know ventilation is important for keeping humidity to the ideal level of 30-50%.
With roof lights at the top of the vehicle they can get blocked with leaves, dirt and debris so it’s important to check them over for obstructions. When checking the roof lights are free from cracks and blockages and the operation of all parts is working correctly.
Check all windows and blinds
Windows are a great source of ventilation to keep condensation and moisture out, during your habitation check you must make sure the windows and blinds are in working order.
Check that each window opens correctly and holds its open place, ensure all the windows
catches work and are secure, look at the operation of fly nets and blinds, make sure they open and close correctly as well as noting any damage. You should also check the seals around each window to ensure no rainwater can get in.
